Swimming in garbage, indeed!

Published:Tuesday | August 26, 2014 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

With regard to the story 'Jamaica is swimming in garbage' (Gleaner, August 25, 2014), the only cure is to encourage recycling, proper disposal, and proper hygiene via public-service announcements.

My first visit to Montego Bay was a shock. The stench from the garbage-filled gullies was alarming. Businesses operate in proximity without realising the potential health hazards. The street vendors ply their trades a few inches away from garbage heaps.

It appears as if the local consensus is to toss garbage anywhere without realising that eventually, it will circle right back.

Environmental preservation should be the watchword.
