Factor discipline in police recruitment

Published:Friday | September 5, 2014 | 12:00 AM

Since the death of Mario Deane, who was unnecessarily confined in a police lock-up, and suffered injuries there resulting in his death, many sources and persons, including editorials, have been calling for training of the police.

It is my experience as a former member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force that police training courses emphasise discipline, which was lacking, resulting in the death of Deane. My thinking is that discipline cannot be taught; it has to be inborn and so this must be factored into the recruitment process.
