MEMBERS OF a joint select committee of Parliament on Tuesday had their first meeting to deliberate on the 140-page Road Traffic Act.

Members discussed plans to invite stakeholders in the transport sector as well as other interest groups to make submissions to the committee.

At its next meeting on September 24, the committee is expected to hear from Dr Janine Dawkins, chief technical officer in the Ministry of Transport and Works, and a representative from the Office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel, who will make presentations on the major proposals in the bill.

The new legislation will repeal the existing Road Traffic Act, replacing it with a new law that is in keeping with international best practices for road safety adopted for local conditions.
