Dressing kids like Amish won't work

THE EDITOR, Sir: I am 5 feet, 7 inches tall. I just measured the distance from my knee to my ankle and came up with about 14 inches. Requiring high-school girls to wear their uniforms 11 inches below the knee seems to be a set-up to punish girls. Adults already know that they are going to rebel .

We should be spending time thinking of more creative ways to motivate girls to learn, achieve, and safeguard themselves. Asking them to dress like girls from the 1900s isn't going to work, as the culture is no longer oriented to that extreme of modesty.

How about giving girls the option of wearing skirt-like culottes with two choices of matching tops? Culottes are more modest than skirts, and also more versatile. For example, it is easy to ride a bike in culottes than to sit side-straddled with another rider. Culottes can be made to look like skirts so that they can be worn in most settings. The length of the culotte can be another topic of discussion.
