Chaos in Mandeville taxi park

Published:Friday | September 12, 2014 | 12:00 AM

The transportation centre in Mandeville is one of the most chaotic places to be. As a commuter who has to use the park, I am scared for my safety.

Recently, the taxis that operate from Mandeville to Royal Flat, Heartease and Kendal have been moved to a central location. The problem is not in the location of the park, but the preparation of the park to accommodate both commuters and vehicles.

I went into the park last Friday and the following Tuesday at approximately 5 p.m., and on both occasions it was just chaotic. There is not a designated area for commuters to stand or any assigned area for the taxis that operate on the different routes to park. The cars come at you from all directions and commuters are left to the mercy of undisciplined taxi drivers, who all feel they are the first ones that should leave the park at anyone's expense.

There is a police presence, but it does not make much of a difference, as all they do is stop the line of traffic to allow taxis to exit and enter the park. The area is too small to accommodate commuters and the taxis from various routes.

It would definitely make it much easier if areas were assigned to taxis on specific routes and a place for commuters to stand to avoid being hit down by taxis. Will someone have to be injured before you do what is right to protect the safety of commuters?

It is really a challenge to stand in a taxi park and not know where to get a cab to go home.
