Veteran campaigner GENERAL Q won his first race in well over three years at Caymanas Park yesterday, when beating the 30-1 outsider RUPERTO by a length in the nine furlong renewal of the Lady Huggins Trophy race for A class horses.
Going off the 8-5 second choice with Winston Wilson aboard, the seven year-old bay horse was held way off the pace for the first half of the race as DON CORLEONE led narrowly from NAMORA, close followed by DRAGONWYCK and the 4-5 favourite BOLD NATIVE..
As they galloped towards the two furlong turn for home the leaders began to falter and the trio of VIVANGE, GENERAL Q and RUPERTO. At the turn VIVANGE was carried wide by GENERAL Q, allowing RUPERTO to take the shortest route on the inside coming VIVANGE into the home stretch.
He quickly disposed of DON CORLEONE but failed to withstand a strong last furlong challenge from fast finishing GENERAL Q, going down by a length under 133lb. Third went to the imported filly VIVANGE at odds of 17-1 and fourth to another importee, NAMORA. The winner is owned by the Kingston Syndicate and trained by Sydney Watson.
