Next up: Teachers as panty police

THE EDITOR, Sir: Why aren't we arguing about the length of blouse sleeves? Aren't elbows as important as knees? Should girls wear panties, bloomers or shorts under their skirts?

Isn't it grossly obvious that modesty is relative in any society and what is dictated cannot fall far from what is normal for the culture and the subcultures? Are Rastafarian, Amish or Muslim girls then expected to raise their skirts to meet the 11-inch demand, presuming you have 11 inches below the knee, while Christian or non-affiliated girls lower theirs?

Enforcing discipline doesn't seem to be the real issue here. Who picked 11 inches as the norm? It is not even justifiable in some cases. Why not set the skirt length to a specific anatomical location on the leg which may not be 11 inches but a fraction of the entire length of the leg?

Let us waste some more time on this issue because it is such a welcome diversion from violence and homophobia.
