THE EDITOR, Sir: Parris Brown made some very simplistic and erroneous arguments in his letter to the editor published on September 24, ('Butt out of Buggery Debate, Mr Robinson'). Permit me to address them:
1) Homosexuality should be illegal because of Judaeo-Christian morality. FALSE: There is no single Judaeo-Christian view of homo-sexuality, and many practi-tioners, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, support the human rights of homosexuals. Even the Catholic Church supports decriminalising sodomy. Finally, Judaeo-Christian morality was once used to support immoral practices such as slavery.
2) Homosexuality is unnatural because only opposite-sex body parts "fit". FALSE: This reasoning quite literally reduces humans to our genitals. The fact is, we are much more than what we carry between our legs, and our sexuality is just one expression of our desire for intimacy. That is why persons who are incapable of sex, such as some disabled individuals, are allowed to marry.
3) Homosexuality spreads HIV, especially in countries without anti-sodomy laws. FALSE: Jamaica has an anti-sodomy law and has the highest HIV prevalence rate among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Western Hemisphere - 33 per cent.
4) Homosexuals are not attracted to women and so they won't get married to mask their sexual orientation. FALSE: Many gay men, including me, married women to 'cure' our homosexuality. However, we often had to think about other men in order to be intimate with females. The need for this mental infidelity is not fair to either partner.
