Blame docs for paracetamol buying binge

Published:Tuesday | October 7, 2014 | 10:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir: During my recent visit to Jamaica, I witnessed the hysteria caused by chikungunya. Of note was the shortage of paracetamol.

Why are the physicians or the Ministry of Health propagating the fallacy that only paracetamol can be used for symptomatic analgesia?

Chik-V and dengue share similar symptoms. It is dengue that the patient should avoid the use of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, not chik-V. By not doing a proper diagnosis, it is the medical professionals who have caused this shortage of paracetamol. The Government is also culpable.
