Orane to lead labour market reform

Businessman Douglas Orane is to chair the Labour Market Reform Commission which has been set up by the Cabinet.

The Labour Market Reform Commission will review existing policies and practices with respect to five elements of the labour market.

These include education and training, productivity, technology and innovation, labour policies and legislation, social protection and industrial relations.

The commission will make recommendations towards the modernisation of the labour market and improving the competitiveness of the Jamaican economy.

Trade unionist Lloyd Goodleigh will be the national coordinator while Silburn Clarke will be the vice-chairman.

Other members of the commission are Brenda Cuthbert, Wayne Jones, Robert Gregory, Professor Gossett Oliver, Kavan Gayle, Danny Roberts, Michael Witter and Noel Cowell.

There is also space reserved for representatives of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica; the Planning Institute of Jamaica, the labour and social security, education and industry investment and commerce ministries.

A youth representative and a representative of the National Workers Union will also have space on the Orane committee.
