Five arrested in Accountant General's Dep't fraud probe
Five persons, including an employee of the Accountant General's Department, were taken into custody yesterday during coordinated raids carried out by personnel from the Revenue Protection Division (RPD), with assistance from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), in sections of the Corporate Area.
The operation included visits to several residential premises in the Whitehall Avenue area and one at Plum Lane - all in Kingston 8 - as well as Higholborn Street, and the Accountant General's Department.
The operation resulted from weeks of investigation into what the authorities have termed "irregularities and fraudulent activities which have resulted in losses totaling several million dollars fleeced in a short period of time".
The Gleaner understands that monies were, over a period of time, fraudulently funnelled from the pension unit of the offices of the accountant general, utilising the accounts of deceased pensioners.
At the Accountant General's Department, several carton boxes and plastic bags packed with hundreds of files were removed by lawmen and loaded into the back of a minivan and taken from the scene.
Cell phones belonging to some employees were also temporarily seized.
