National Youth Month 2014 was launched with a bang yesterday at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre in St Andrew, where hundreds of youth converged.
Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna noted that the transport centre was chosen for the launch, as it allowed for more interaction with the youth.
"We have been working to go into the youth spaces. One of the things that we have done is increase our online membership users from 46,000 last year to 115,000 this year," she told The Gleaner.
"We have really been trying to get into their spaces and ensure that they know what is happening, to let more of them understand the new programmes that we have in place for them," Hanna added.
The theme for this year's staging of National Youth Month is 'Not Leaving It To Chance'. The ministry is seeking to promote and execute focused, strategic and deliberate actions geared towards youth development.
"We are very strategic in the programmes that we have put together for our youth and measuring the impact. We are using the data coming out in terms of unemployment - global data from the International Labour Organiaation as well - and so everything we have done over the past two years - and certainly for the last year - has been very strategic through our various organisations," Hanna stated.
