Brave to bet against Republican win

Published:Tuesday | November 4, 2014 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir: The Republicans look set to take the United States Senate today.
Major pollsters - Nate Silver/FiveThirtyEight,    74%; Sam Wang/PEC,    65% - favour them to win (as of November 3, 2014).
The overall consensus makes the Republicans the overwhelming odds-on favourites.

In truth, the best odds being offered (by Paddypower) were 1/8 for Republicans and 9/2 for Democrats. All other bookies (offering odds) make the odds even more gloomy for the rank outsider, putting the Republicans at 1/16 and the Democrats at 15/2, in a two-horse field.

If this were a race ran at Caymanas Park, you would get $50 for a $50 bet or a money-back proposition. While if the Democrats actually won, you would take home $425 for your $50 bet. Those are prohibitive odds akin to Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson.

Assuming the Republicans do win, it would spell the overturning of the Democratic agenda, including the weakening of Obamacare and demolishing immigration reforms, make Supreme Court nominees virtually impossible to pass, and may even involve impeachment proceedings against President Obama.

While a conviction is practically impossible, a lot of Americans would delight in seeing a black man being horse-whipped in public.
Then again, Buster Douglas did KO Mike Tyson, didn’t he?
