WESTERN BUREAU: High drama replaced the usual tranquillity outside the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, when a motorist who mowed down a policeman and a civilian tried to flee but was apprehended.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. while court was in session, unfolded along North Street, in front of the post office that adjoins the courthouse.

Curious onlookers, from inside the courthouse and surrounding areas, quickly converged on the scene, as the two occupants of the blue Nissan Sunny motor car, which was involved in the incident, were handcuffed and searched.

An injured police officer and a civilian, who were both writhing in pain, were rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Nissan Sunny disobeyed a police order to stop and sped from St James Street on to North Street. In the process, the civilian and the cop were mowed down. The car crashed along the side of the road seconds later.

Following the crash, the driver and his passenger reportedly tried to flee the scene, but were accosted by other police personnel.

The civilian, who was hit by the car, sustained facial injuries, while the policeman suffered an injury to his leg.
