Abortion must be last resort

THE EDITOR, Sir: Abortion is a controversial issue. The topic provides some compelling and some unjustified arguments. Even though I consider abortion murder, I believe it should be legal in cases such as rape and incest.

Legalising abortion will lead to a decrease in the mortality rate and will lessen the emotional trauma that mothers face during unwanted pregnancies. However, abortion should only be introduced as a last resort, because it is permanent. Having an abortion may cause serious emotional problems, such as depression and other psychological issues.

Alternatively, I strongly believe that we should be introducing more options for adoption instead of abortions.

Furthermore, there should always be a police investigation following the report of an underage girl who gets pregnant, and every single perverted man should be sent to jail, for a minimum of five years, for each conviction, regardless of his status in society.

We also need to investigate and charge parents who are aware of their children being sexually abused and allow it to happen, in addition to soliciting their underage girls for the sake of money and other material things.

Finally, parents must set positive examples for their children, instil strong values in them at a young age, and teach their children how to say no to men, regardless of what is offered to them in return.
