Eleven for Post to Post Superstakes
Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer
Eleven horses were declared at the overnight stage yesterday for the 36th running of the Post to Post-sponsored Superstakes over 2000 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The draw was conducted live in mid-afternoon inside the Trainers' Room attended by representatives of the sponsors, along with Caymanas Track Limited and Jamaica Racing Commission officials as well as representatives of the press.
Heading the list of nominees is last year's winner, TYPEWRITER, coming from post position two with big-race jockey Shane Ellis again riding him for trainer Spencer Chung.
Also in the line-up are the 2013 runner-up PERFECT NEIGHBOUR with Shamaree Muir riding for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta (who is yet to win a Superstakes) from the number eight post position and top-rated COMMANDING CHIEF with champion Dane Nelson riding him for trainer Everal Francis from the number 10 post position.
With COMMANDING CHIEF having won the first three of his four races this season, beating TYPEWRITER and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR twice in the process, the classy six-year-old gelding by War Marshall out of She Knows Beau is expected to start favourite.
He, along with TYPEWRITER and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, are the top-three distance horses in the country and will carry the bulk of the betting. An interesting entry is the progressive 3-y-o colt FRANFIELD, to be ridden by former champion Omar Walker for leading Superstakes winning trainer Richard Azan, who bids for his ninth win in this rich and prestigious race following multiple wins by DORVAL (four in a row) and MARK MY WORD (three straight).
Forecast odds: COMMANDING CHIEF the 7-5 ante-post favourite, TYPEWRITER 9-5, PERFECT NEIGHBOUR 3-1, FRANFIELD 7-1, EXOTIC GOLD (Dick Cardenas) 8-1, MILITARY MOVE (Winson Griffiths), 12-1, UNCLE TAF 15-1 (Ameth Robles).
