Congrats, Kenny Benjamin!
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Please allow me to use this medium to publicly congratulate Mr Kenneth 'Kenny' Sushil Benjamin on receiving the 2014 Hummingbird Award for International Philanthropy from the American Friends of Jamaica.
I have known Kenny for many of the years he has been living here and it warms my heart to see that he is receiving the recognition he deserves for the myriad philanthropic work he is doing and has been doing for a long time.
Many naturalised citizens enjoy the benefits of Jamaican citizenship without giving back to the country, but on many occasions, in conversations, he has expressed his gratitude to Jamaica for what he has achieved here. He is amassing an impressive list of well-deserved national and international accolades and I am sure he'll continue to do so in the years to come, because I have always known him to be kind-hearted, generous, compassionate, gentle, soft-spoken, affable and quietly humble person. His love for people and animals of all types is renowned and this is manifested in his work with the dispossessed and the resuscitation of the Hope Zoo.
I am particularly happy that a petting zoo has been established in order for the children to interact with the animals as Jamaican children tend to be squeamish and scared of the tamest domestic animal. They do not have an affinity for animals on the whole, so this is a start to allay their fears and encourage them to love and care for all animals.
Kenny has proved himself to be an entrepreneur 'par excellence' as he turns his many diverse hobbies into successful business ventures, e.g., the Tropical Ornamental Fish, which he will now be exporting to markets like the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, which will bring in much-needed foreign exchange. He will tie this into his philanthropic activities in Jamaica's inner-city communities from which the young and unemployed will benefit. This plan will certainly have far-reaching, positive effects on a large scale.
Kenny's philanthropic contributions are too many to list here, but wherever there's a need, if he is at all able to assist, he will.
Congrats again, Kenny. Keep up the good work and God's richest blessings in all that you do.
