THE 2014 intercollegiate netball season came to an end on Thursday at the St Andrew High netball court with G.C. Foster 'A', Mico 'B' and College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE) being crowned champions in their divisions.
G.C. Foster 'A' stopped Mico 'A' 35-27 in the Seniors, Mico 'B' got by Portmore Community College in the Intermediate and CASE swept by G.C. Foster 22-11 in the Junior final.
The Senior final between G.C. Foster 'A' and last year's beaten finalists, Mico 'A', attracted most attention. G.C. Foster were determined to break a long drought, with their last title coming seven year ago.
Heavy rain forced the game to start some three hours late, but the fair-size crowd was given a treat from some of the island's top netballers. It was a very confident G.C. Foster team that took the court as, led by the likes of Nicole Aiken-Pinnock (GK), Stacian Facey (GD), Shantel Slater (GS) and Deneen Taylor (GA), they were favourites to get the better of Mico led by goal defence Vangelee Williams and goal attack Nicole Dixon.
Mico led 9-8 after the first quarter, but G.C. Foster took control and dominated the rest of the match.
In earlier finals, G.C. Foster College 'C' failed to cope with the fast-starting CASE team who led 12-2 after the second quarter and pulled away for a convincing win.
In the intermediate final it was Portmore Community College who were in control early, leading 7-5 at the end of the quarter before Mico drew level (12-12) at half-time.
Portmore led in the third quarter, 21-17, before Mico, through the accurate shooting of goal shooter Danielle Masters, took control and sealed a 34-28 victory.
