Non-voters cast weighty protest ballot

The only winners in Monday's Westmoreland Central by-election were the 61.2 per cent who did not even bother to turn up to vote. Congratulations much!

This was the perfect way of demonstrating their disenchantment with the poor Jamaican politics, governance and representation offered to them. But, of course, this is not worrisome in any way to the movers and shakers, whose only objective is to be seated in Gordon House.

No need for anyone to gloat now about winning, but rather, they should take heart and realise that 61.2 per cent is a huge number of 'protest votes'. This they did in order to display their dissatisfaction, thus the silent majority is speaking very loud and clear.

The real job now is to find out what has caused such disenchantment in an otherwise vibrant voting constituency. There is a big problem here, and something is definitely rotten in Denmark.
