Having the right state of mind

Daily, we face challenges or we are so busy that we forget to take a break and focus on ourselves. Not taking a break from our regular stressful lives does us more harm than good. We have to take the time to ensure that we are healthy in our minds, body and spirit.
Outlook solicited the expertise of licensed Mental Health Counsellor Yvonne Ricketts and clinical psychologist and acting president of the Jamaican Psychological Society, Dr Kai Morgan, on tips on how to maintain your mental health.
Eating healthy is one thing that both Morgan and Ricketts suggested was important in maintaining one's mental health. Ricketts emphasised that not only should one eat healthy, but also on time.
We need to take time to rest. Not only does this mean that we should get the necessary eight hours of sleep, but also take a few deep breaths throughout the day to help put ourselves in a calm frame of mind during a hectic day.
Know yourself is another key point. Morgan points out that awareness is key to identifying triggers and knowing when you've reached boundaries and critical points.
Part of maintaining good mental health is striking a balance in your life, stated Dr Morgan. It is important that one finds time for pleasure in-between one's work and/or school schedule.
When you are unhappy or not pleased with how something is going, you should find the willingness to change, according to Ricketts. Remember Albert Einstein's quote, "insanity: doing the same thing over and over again expecting the different results." Sometimes it takes a leap of faith and a change.
Sometimes the way you treat those around you impacts the way you feel about yourself, and this is why it is important to have the right attitude. Be conscious of people's feelings around you and ensure that you show care when it is needed.
There is no better gift than giving, and this is something that both Ricketts and Dr Morgan believe will impact your life. It is no myth, rather it is a fact that giving makes you feel a lot better about yourself.
Happiness is sometimes a choice. We need to let go of things that we cannot change and learn to find something to be happy about even when the world and everything seems dim.You also have to forgive. The anger that you keep in can keep you from moving on or being happy, and nothing is worth your happiness.
Dr Morgan and Ricketts note that spirituality is vital to one's everyday growth. It is good to spend time each day in meditation and devoted to your spiritual growth.
Finally, Dr Morgan recommends endorsing and embracing love. Love yourself, everyone and life.
