Portland tragedy - Son reverses bus and kills mother
A regular visit by a loving son to his elderly mother ended in tragedy last Friday, leaving the Hectors River area of Portland in mourning.
The tragic sequence of events saw a senior citizen being killed by the Coaster bus her son drove to visit her.
According to the Corporate Communi-cation Unit, about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, the driver of the bus, whose name is being withheld, stopped at the house of his 68-year-old mother, Myrtle Wright, for a brief visit.
He was reversing the bus, unaware that his mother was behind the vehicle, and accidentally hit her down.
"He was just trying to make his way home so he turned and was reversing on to the main road when he hit her," said a police constable who visited the scene shortly after the accident.
"He wasn't drunk or anything. He said he just didn't see her behind the bus; it was just a tragic and unfortunate situation."
Wright was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital in the parish where she died while undergoing treatment .
The Manchioneal police told The Sunday Gleaner that no charges have been filed against the driver of the bus, and investigations are under way.
Wright is the first road fatality in Portland for this year.
