Arnett Gardens and coach Jerome Waite rewrote the local Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) history books at Barbican Sport Complex yesterday, after beating host Barbican 1-0 to record the longest winning streak in a season of local top-flight football.

Dicoy Williams netted the game's only goal, heading home Kenneil Hyde's 21st minute corner to seal the team's 10th consecutive victory.

The most wins by a team in one season (nine) was held prior to this season by former winners Hazard United, Reno and Village United. But Arnett's victory against Barbican makes them the sole holder of that record and Waite said it was not than just a victory for Arnett, but for local football.

"This means a lot to me," Waite said, "because at this level it's the first time a thing like this has occurred (for me), although at the youth level I have won numerous games more than this. But this is an achievement not only for me, but for Jamaican football."

He said the aim now is to try and maintain their level consistency for the remainder of the campaign and stretch their record to 11 straight wins when they take on Montego Bay United in their next game.

The last time Arnett tasted defeat or failed to take full points their opponents were MoBay United, which beat them 5-0 in the first-round contest.

Also MoBay is the only team not to have tasted defeat at the hands of Waite's team during their run of invincibility.

"That is the whole objective (to maintain form through the season). But the fact that Arnett have gone 10 straight, teams will now focus on Arnett, so we have to look at each game as they come.

"Our next game is MoBay United; that team beat us all of five-nil in the first meeting. It's a Monday night encounter and it will be a 'rumble in the jungle', as making it 11 straight is one of our objectives," he pointed out.
