Eleven students attending Jamaica College were awarded bursaries yesterday at the school's Karl Hendrickson Auditorium in St Andrew.

During his remarks at the ceremony, principal Ruel Reid emphasised the school's commitment to its support programmes and urged parents to coach their children to success.

"One of the tremendous hallmarks since I have been principal has always been our commitment to take care of those who have needs. We always have strong support programmes to ensure that those students who require lunch, bus fares, uniforms or books are taken care of," said Reid, who is also a senator.

"Here we are providing a financial support mechanism. I am saying to parents that there is that other component - that person who is the coach, the mentor, the person that is going to manage your youngsters on their path to excellence," he added.

Proven Management Limited CEO Christopher Williams chose to speak directly to the students, imploring them to use the opportunities they have at Jamaica College to propel them to excellence.

"The best opportunity I got in life was to attend Jamaica College," said Williams, who is the immediate past president of the Jamaica College Old Boys' Association. "Millions of dollars are invested in Jamaica College every year for you, students - not to win Manning Cup, not to win Champs, but for you guys to win life."

The recipients of the bursaries were Akeem McKenzie, Andrew Francis, Anthony Haslam, Anthony Williams, Chanarie Lindsay, Danjuan Parkes, Jaleel Richards, Kadeem Brown, Kevin Fraser, Trivette Thompson and Tyrone Williams.

The bursaries were disbursed for the 2014-2015 school year and are provided to those students who are either unable to afford the full cost of tuition or students who excelled in academics, sports and other extracurricular activities.

This is the second year Jamaica College has held a ceremony for beneficiaries. In 2013, seven students were awarded bursaries under the R. Danny Williams Bursary Fund.
