'The Merry Widow' on screen again Sunday - Met show grosses US$2m in North America
The Met: Live in HD continued its ninth season last Saturday with a live transmission of its new production of The Merry Widow, starring Renee Fleming, Nathan Gunn and Broadway's Kelli O'Hara. An estimated attendance of 86,000 persons in North America earned the show gross of US$2 million. It was seen live on more than 900 screens.
An estimated additional 110,000 people saw it live on 1,000 screens in 35 countries in Europe, 11 countries in Latin America, Russia, as well as Egypt, Israel, Jamaica, and Morocco.
Delayed showings throughout Asia, Australia, Madagascar, New Zealand and South Africa, plus encore performances in North America and Europe, are expected to boost worldwide attendance of The Merry Widow to more than 255,000.
Audiences in Jamaica will have another chance to see the delightful operatta with dialogue and songs in English when it encores this Sunday, January 25, 11:30 a.m., at Palace Cineplex and Palace Multiplex.
Broadway director and choreographer Susan Stroman, whose many credits include the Tony Award-winning musicals Crazy For You, Contact and The Producers, made her Met debut with this new staging of Lehar's popular operetta on New Year's Eve. Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific, The Bridges of Madison County, Peter Pan Live!) made her operatic debut that same night. The performance was led by Andrew Davis.
The live transmission, hosted by Joyce DiDonato, was directed for cinema by Gary Halvorson.
The Met: Live in HD, the Met's award-winning series of live transmissions to cinemas around the world, has expanded its worldwide distribution to more than 2,000 in 70 countries this season, the largest global audience the initiative has ever reached. The series has sold more than 17 million tickets since its inception in 2006.
The Merry Widow was the sixth of 10 live transmissions to be shown this season. The next transmission of the Met Opera 2014-15 season will be Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, starring Vittorio Grigolo, on January 31.
