Dancehall dying for quality

Published:Monday | February 2, 2015 | 12:00 AM

It is with sadness that I read about the wilting international record sales of our Jamaican artistes.

Bob Marley was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame some years ago, one of the greatest achievements that can be bestowed on a musician.

His legacy lives on more than 30 years after his death and will be appreciated far into the future.

Today, we have dancehall proponents who produce often lewd, rambling lyrics lacking melodic chords, accompanied by ranting and shouting. If we dismiss the need for quality in our music, we will never produce a Bob Marley or a Bob Andy in the near future, and we will be nothing more than a dot in musical history.
