The newly renovated Hi-Lo flagship supermarket in Manor Park was officially opened last Friday, to much fanfare to celebrate and promote a true Jamaican company.

The renovation exercise was undertaken by GraceKennedy Limited, who acquired the Hi-Lo Food Store in 1984. Today, Hi-Lo Food Stores are operated as a division of the GK Foods and Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of GraceKennedy Ltd.

GraceKennedy Group CEO Don Wehby emphasised that their main aim has always been to exceed the expectations of their customers, through fast service, frequent savings, full shelves, and friendly smiles. He also promises bigger and better things to come for the next 30 years and beyond from Hi-Lo. Included in the new store is a First Global counter where customers can conduct some of their banking transactions while they shop.

Representing the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Commerce, Stephen Wedderburn gave the keynote address on behalf of Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, minister of state of the ministry, and spoke of the success of the agricultural sector through private-public sector partnerships with government. He emphasised the critical role Hi-Lo Food Stores play in the building of a new Jamaica, in meeting the constantly changing needs of consumers, in building the economy through expansion, job creation, innovation, and through visionary leadership.

'Black Addiction' kept the audience entertained and was later joined by Alaine, brand ambassador for First Global Bank, who had the crowd singing along and rocking to some of her popular songs, including We rise, Shine ya light and Bye Bye Bye.

The entertainment segment was followed by the unveiling of the newly designed Hi-Lo sign outside the store by Andrea Coy, senior manager of Global Category Management, Don Wehby, CEO of the GraceKennedy Group, and Renee Nathan, general manager, Hi-Lo Stores.

Those in attendance were then treated to a variety of scrumptious dishes such as lobster macaroni and cheese, run-down shrimp, honey-glazed chicken with chocolate waffle, and cupcakes, all made with ingredients available at Hi-Lo.
