Negril donkey races tomorrow

NEGRIL, Westmoreland:

The Rotary Club of Negril's 10th Annual Donkey Races and Fun Day fundraiser will take place at the Wavz Beach in the resort town tomorrow.

Eighteen donkeys are expected to vie for top honours this year. Like last year, the day's activities will also include music, games and various contests, food booths, a Ferris wheel, and a bounce-about for children. There will also be spot prizes, a raffle, and gate prizes.

The event has, over the years, attracted thousands of new and repeat patrons. It is one of the few events held in the town that target a general audience and not solely a party crowd. Last year, the event was held at the same venue and saw scores of residents and tourists in attendance.

The highlight of the event will be the donkey races and the Donkey Fashion Parade, which are akin to a comedy show, as the stubborn animals quite often refuse to follow the instructions of their jockeys, by either shrugging the riders from off their backs or refusing to run despite the urgings of their jockeys.

Sectional Prizes

Sectional prizes will also be awarded for the Best Dressed Donkey, Worst Temper and Most Congenial Donkey.

The Rotary Club of Negril is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year. The mission of the club is to provide service in the Negril community, with special emphasis on education, literacy and youth development. The organisation runs several projects within the resort town, among them the tutoring of children for the Grade Four Literacy Test, school infrastructure improvements, the provision of academic scholarships, and literacy and leadership summer camps.
