Boswell bags MVP title in Sandals Business House football
David Boswell, of Couples Tower Isle, was named Most Valuable Player of the Sandals Resorts-sponsored St Ann/St. Mary Business House football competition at the awards ceremony held at Beaches Ocho Rios last Thursday.
Couples Tower Isle walked away with the lion's share of the prizes, winning $60,000 and the first-place Sandals Resorts International Trophy.
Baking Enterprise, which placed second, received $50,000, while Beaches Ocho Rios and Grand Bahai Principe were awarded $40,000 and $30,000, respectively, for placing third and fourth.
The Fair Play Award for sportsmanship and discipline went to Margaritaville Montego Bay.
In delivering the sponsors address, Sandals Resorts Ocho Rios regional public relations manager, Ian Spencer, urged the business sector to play a greater role in the development of sports in the parishes.
"Sports is one of the vehicles for transformation and can provide a platform for economic and social growth," Spencer noted. "Therefore, if we invest in our young people by sponsoring competitions, whether football, netball, cricket, or other tournaments, we are contributing significantly to the future of our nation."
Spencer pointed out that the Sandals-sponsored Business House football competition had, over the years, assisted in providing significant employment for footballers in the area as many of the teams hired them to participate in the competition, thus allowing them to learn a skill.
The public relations manager hailed Couples Tower Isle on their sterling performance, describing the team as worthy champions.
President of the St Ann Football Association Danny Beckford called on private and public-sector companies to assist in transforming the Drax Hall Football Complex into a model for the country. He cited the need for proper changing and bathroom facilities as well as additional stands around the premises.
