Why vote for Joel Garner?

Published:Monday | February 9, 2015 | 12:00 AM

I agree with the critics who argue that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), led by Dave Cameron, could have acted more expeditiously in dealing with the West Indies players' revolt during the tour of India, and sent representatives immediately to talk face to face with the players.

Surely, however, most of the blame for the abandonment of the tour must fall on the players, whose disagreement was with the actions of their union - West Indies Players' Association. Couldn't they have waited a couple of days for the WICB representatives to arrive on the scene?

Having said this, the recent decision of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) directors to back Joel Garner for the post of president of the WICB needs to be examined carefully. What is their rationale for backing Mr Garner? I searched the web for 'Joel Garner' extensively, and couldn't find a single reference to any work experience or education he may have acquired outside of cricket. That is not to say he has none - just that I couldn't find any.

The questions the JCA need to answer before February 17 are:

1. What are Mr Garner's qualifications for the post?

2. Is playing and coaching cricket sufficient to qualify one for heading a multimillion US-dollar business?
