Eighteen guns seized in St James since start of year
Police officers in the Area One Division of St James, led by Superintendent Derrick Champagnie, continue their fight against crime with the latest seizure of one Beretta 9mm pistol, one Sig Sauer 9mm pistol and 18 rounds of ammunition during an operation in Tangle River, St James, on the weekend, pushing the number of illegal guns seized in that division since the start of the year to 18, along with 140 assorted rounds of ammunition.
Operations Officer for the Division Superintendent Gary Francis believes the search for illegal weapons is of utmost priority for the police in their murder reduction programme for 2015.
"Everything will be done to diligently search for these weapons as well as apprehend the offenders, as firearms are usually the weapons of choice for murders in the division. The operation will be sustained and driven by intelligence to bring about the desired results," said Francis. He is also warning the public against harbouring criminals as this is an offence and perpetrators will be prosecuted.
During the weekend's operational activities two men wanted for murder and gun-related incidents were also picked up by lawmen.
Assistant Commissioner in charge of Area One Paul Ferguson says these intelligence-driven operational activities, coupled with the use of technology are geared towards curtailing criminal activities in the various divisions.
