The former head of the St Catherine North Police, Superintendent Harry Daley has been found guilty of corruption.

The verdict was handed down this morning by Senior Resident Magistrate, Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court.

Superintendent Daley has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

However, his lawyer has indicated that she will be appealing the conviction.

It has been a fierce battle between the defense and the prosecution, since the trial began in April.

The prosecution led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Dirk Harrison, was relying video and evidence as well as the testimonies of witnesses.

The prosecution was adamant that Daley collected protection money for a plaza in St Catherine.

However, the defense insisted that the money that Harry Bungles was alleged to have collected, was repayment for a loan.

The defense closed its case on November 5 and the lawyers for the defense and the prosecution addressed the court.

At that time defense lawyer, Valerie Neita-Robertson asked the Resident Magistrate to return a not guilty verdict because the Crown did not did not prove its case against Daley.

She said there was no basis for the assertion or inference that the money paid to Daley was extortion or protection money.

She also said that Daley’s defense that the money was for the repayment of a loan had not been challenged.

However, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Dirk Harrison, said the prosecution had put forward a case dubbed ‘the trial of the quintessential corrupt cop’.

He said Harry Daley, corruptly accepted $15,000 from the complainant for doing an act while performing his public function.

Harrison said the Crown had proved its case against Daley and insisted that the witnesses’ testimonies and the video recordings substantiated its case.
