Farmers to benefit using organic fertilisers

Published: Wednesday April 9, 2008 | 9:52 am Comments 0

Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton said farmers could get higher prices for their produce if they begin using organic fertilisers.

He said many persons have switched to eating only organically grown foods, which are considered healthier than those grown using chemical fertilisers.

According to Dr. Tufton farmers could benefit from this lifestyle change, as organic fertilisers are a less expensive alternative to chemical fertilisers.

He said the ministry has been offering technical support to persons interested in producing local organic fertilisers.

Currently there are about three companies involved in organic fertiliser production in Jamaica.

Officials from the ministry are scheduled to take part in the launch of another local fertiliser at Johnsons Organic Fertiliser Company in Kitson Town, St. Catherine today.
