Cocaine seized at Port Bustamante

Fifty pounds of cocaine valued at $48 million was seized yesterday at Port Bustamante.

The Customs Department said it was discovered aboard the vessel Vega Azurit by the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team and personnel from the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The vessel reportedly arrived from Guyana.

The Customs Department said a 40-foot refrigerated container declared as being empty was searched and five boxes labelled Coke, Pepsi and Canada Dry were found to contain white powdery substance resembling cocaine.

The drug was removed and taken to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division where it was tested and weighed.

No arrests were made in connection with the seizure but investigators say they are working to find the port facilitators behind the illegal import.
