The United States is to cut almost 100,000 troops in light of budget cuts.

Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said the plan is to develop a smaller, leaner military.

Panetta said under a restructuring exercise the Army will drop from a peak of 570,000 to 490,000 and the marines be cut by 20,000 over the next five years.

He said the US will boost special forces and retain the ability to defeat any enemy on land.

The Pentagon is facing budget cuts of $487 billion over the next 10 years.
