Defending champions Jamaica College and Holmwood Technical will begin the defence of their respective titles, as the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships officially starts today at the National Stadium.

The preliminary round of the 2,000-metre Steeplechase Open for boys took place yesterday, a day before the regular start.

George Forbes, competitions coordinator for ISSA, said the decision was arrived at following complaints from coaches that the running of the first round was too close to the 1500 metres.

The Championships, now in its 102nd year, will have three finals on today's opening day of the four-day meet.

The finals are the Girls’ Triple Jump Open at 1.30 p.m., followed by the Girls’ Class One Discus at 3.25p.m. and the lone Boys’ final, the Class One Long jump at 5.20 p.m.

The first event today is the 100 metres in the boys’ decathlon, which is scheduled to start at 8.15 a.m.

Jamaica College will receive strong challenges from Calabar, Kingston College and Wolmer’s for the boys’ title; while for the girls’ title it is a two-horse race between Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen.
