United States (US)President Barack Obama says legalising drugs is not the answer to the problems caused by the trafficking of illegal narcotics in the Americas.
Mr Obama was speaking to a group of executives in Colombia ahead of the Summit of the Americas, which is now underway in that country.
He argues that legalisation could worsen the problem, but says he was open to a debate about the issue. The US president was responding to demands by regional leaders for a new strategy in the war on narcotics.
On Friday, Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina told the BBC that the current strategies against drug trafficking were making the war on drugs un-winnable.
