More defective vehicles removed

As the country strives for a safer traffic environment, there has been a marked jump in the number of defective vehicles removed from the nation’s roads.

The Data in the latest Economic and Social Survey highlight that approximately 17,000 more vehicles were not granted fitness certification last year, when compared to the figure for 2010.

Under the Operation Fit Vehicle Programme, a total of 48,596 defective motor vehicles were removed from the traffic environment in 2011.

Motor vehicle defects are seen as major contributors to road crashes.

Meanwhile, the data show that the country had a total of 9,453 traffic collisions last year.

Three hundred and eight such incidents resulted in deaths, 822 in severe injuries and 3,329 in minor injuries.
