The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) says it could not sign an agreement with the Government that is not in line with the level of increase requested by its members.

That is the explanation offered by JTA president Paul Adams as he sought to explain why the association did not sign the heads of agreement with the Government for the 2012 to 2014 contract period.

The Nurses Association of Jamaica, the Jamaica Civil Service Association and several trade unions that represent various categories of public sector employees signed the agreement at Jamaica House last Thursday.

But Mr Adams says it was his understanding that these unions agreed to a wage freeze and adds that his executive does not have the authority to accept anything less than the membership requested in their claim.
