The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) says sexologist Mariela Castro who is daughter of Cuban president Raul Castro stopped short of showing support for gay rights, after telling a panel on gay, bisexual and transgender in New York on the weekend that her country’s government was democratic.
According to CMC, Castro says many Cubans still grapple with speaking about gay and lesbian rights issues. She says if the Cuban government were to apologise for its past persecution of gays then it “would be an act of hypocrisy”.
Castro’s appearance on the panel drew complaints that organisers had hand-picked the audience to avert hostile questions or other confrontations.
