Taxi fare increase talks

Published: Wednesday June 13, 2012 | 5:30 pm Comments 0

Talks are to continue between the government and taxi associations seeking a fare increase following preliminary discussions today.

Those talks were held at the monthly meeting of the taxi associations and the Transport Authority.

And Dion Chance, the President of the National Council of Taxi Associations, says Minister without portfolio in the transport ministry, Dr. Morais Guy, has signalled that the government is open to negotiations.

Taxi associations have been upset that the government has not acknowledged their request for an increase.

And the associations have also expressed concern about comments by Transport Minister, Dr. Omar Davies, last month that several conditions must be met before any consideration for an adjustment to taxi fares.

Chance says at today’s meeting Dr. Morais Guy sought to clarify that position.

NCOTA and the Route Taxi Association of Jamaica have both submitted proposals for a 30 per cent fare increase.
