West Indies whip New Zealand by nine wickets

West Indies defeated New Zealand by nine wickets in the opening One-Day International of the five-match series at Sabina Park a short while ago.

Set a revised total of 136 from 33 overs because of rain, West Indies reached the target with 52 balls remaining.

Hard-hitting opener Chris Gayle 63 and Dwayne Smith 65 led the Caribbean side home with an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 133 runs.

Earlier, Jamaican all-rounder Andre Russell bagged four for 45 to restrict New Zealand to 190 for nine.

Ravi Rampaul and off-spinner Sunil Narine ended with two wickets each, while captain Darren Sammy had a wicket.

BJ Watling top scored for New Zealand with 60.

Scores: New Zealand 190/9 off 50 overs.
