Weather system threatens flooding in region

Published: Wednesday August 1, 2012 | 6:46 pm Comments 0

Some Caribbean countries are bracing for flash floods and possible landslides from heavy rains associated with an area of low pressure located 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands.

Several regional countries have already urged their residents to take precaution as the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) has said the low pressure system continues to show signs of organisation.

The NHC says environmental conditions are conducive for gradual development of the system, which has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours as it moves westward at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

The Barbados Meteorological Department has issued a special weather bulletin advising that a tropical storm was expected to affect the island late Friday into Saturday.
