United States President Barack Obama has told his supporters in Chicago that it will be a fight to the finish in his bid be to re-elected this November.

"This is not going to be a race like Usain Bolt where we're like 40 yards ahead and we can just kind of start jogging 10 feet before the finish line," Obama said.

"We're going to have to run through the tape. But we're really well positioned to not just win but to keep America moving forward," he is quoted as saying.

According to the Telegraph, Obama was addressing about 100 of Chicago's elite, who had paid US$40,000 a head for the exclusive invitation as part of a fund-raising event.

The US presidential election will be held on November 6.

Obama will be going up against Republican Mitt Romney.

Bolt secured the status of a legend at the London Games after repeating his Olympic win in the 100 meters and 200 meters events.
