Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Lucien Jones is expressing confidence that the country will see fewer than 300 persons killed on the nation’s roadways this year.

According to Jones, statistics show that the number of road fatalities has been trending down since 2010.

He said data also shows a 20 per cent reduction in the number of road fatalities since the start of the year compared to the similar period in 2011.

Despite the improvement, Jones said efforts should be made to reduce road fatalities further, as it not only affects individual families but the country as a whole.

Jones said he is also satisfied that the number of children killed since this year compared to last year has declined significantly.

He said 38 children were killed in the first eight months of 2011 in comparison to 15 so far this year.

He is appealing to motorists to be extra careful especially when driving in school zones and residential areas.
