A police corporal, who was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm was granted bail, when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court today.

The corporal, Andre Sibbles of the Above Rocks Police in St Catherine, was granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

His attorney, Keith Bishop, told the court that Sibbles was lawfully executing his duty, when he was attacked by the complainant.

He said on February 2010, the woman entered the police station and told the policeman an expletive, when he attempted to have her leave a restricted area.

The policeman then reportedly attempted to arrest the woman but she allegedly used a bottle to hit him in his face and other parts of his body.

She was subsequently arrested and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, using indecent language and resisting arrest.

While she was facing the court on the criminal charges, a report made to the police complaint department and the Director of Public Prosecutions later ruled that Sibbles be charged.

The policeman is to return to court November 27.
