The Department of Correctional Services has revealed that it has been holding training sessions with employees following the reported suicide of a 16-year-old girl at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre on Wednesday.
The family of Vanessa Wint has expressed disappointment about the way her parents were informed and how the matter was handled overall.
Yesterday, Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Prendergast, said he had apologised to the family for some of the issues identified and that correctional officers are being briefed on how to handle similar situations.
Yesterday, the family’s attorney, Pam Whittingham met with Lieutenant Colonel Prendergast but declined to comment on the discussions.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Prendergast says Wint had been under the care of various health professionals since she first entered the system three years ago.
He says a day before Wint’s death, she received counselling from one of the department’s clinical psychologists.
