Court today for Indian businessman on human trafficking charges

Indian businessman Rajesh Gurunani who is accused of human trafficking is expected to stand trial in the Home Circuit Court today.

The businessman, who operates stores in Kingston and St Catherine, is also facing the charge of withholding passports.

Gurunani has denied the allegations.

He was charged in March 2011 during an operation by the Organised Crime Investigation Division.

It is alleged that Gurunani recruited persons from India and promised them jobs in his stores in Jamaica.

It is further alleged that on their arrival in Jamaica the businessman confiscated their passports and forced them to work long hours in his stores for little pay.
