The three police constables charged with the murder of schoolgirl Vanessa Kirkland are expected to go on trial today.

Constables Anakay Bailey, Dervin Hayles and Andrew Wayne Smith are to stand trial in the Home Circuit Court in Downtown, Kingston.

The Immaculate Conception High School student was shot and killed in March last year after the policemen reportedly shot at the vehicle in which she was a passenger.
Six other persons in the car were also shot and injured.

The police had reported that on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 a motor car was being pursued by a three-vehicle team from the Mobile Reserve following reports that it had earlier been used to transport three men from a robbery in Portmore, St Catherine.

The police further reported that on reaching Norman Lane in Kingston 13, the motor car stopped suddenly and two men fired on the first police vehicle.

According to the police, the fire was returned and Kirkland was fatally shot and the other persons injured.
