Opposition Leader Andrew Holness is expressing extreme disappointment at the country's failure to register any improvement in its latest ranking on the Corruption Perception Index published by international watchdog group Transparency International yesterday.

Holness says the fact that Jamaica’s ranking of 83rd among 175 countries for the second consecutive year was evidence that the government has made no real effort to focus on reducing corruption in Jamaica.

Holness says the government has been paying lip-service to the anti-corruption agenda while failing to tackle corruption in any meaningful way.

He has accused the government of demonstrating little regard for the Office of the Contractor General and its rulings.

Holness says the Opposition remains disappointed that the Government took the OCG to court to challenge its powers.

And the Opposition Leader says the Opposition is also disappointed that Richard Azan was reappointed a junior minister and that no action has been taken against Mayor of May Pen Scean Barnswell, despite the findings of the OCG report into the Spaldings Market affair.

According to Holness, the actions of the government have not only served to undermine the OCG and compromise public goodwill in that Office, but have sent a message of general disregard for rules and procedures at the highest level.
