UPDATE: Driver in Mandela crash dies

A man who was rushed to hospital after the car he was driving crashed into a tree along the Mandela Highway this morning, has succumbed to his injuries.


Dead is 62-year-old Barrington Downer of Kellyman Terrace, Kingston 11.

Downer died at 12:15 p.m. at the Spanish Town hospital.

One eyewitness told The Gleaner that the driver of the red 1993 Subaru motor vehicle was speeding along the Mandela Highway, heading in an easterly direction, when he overtook another motor vehicle and lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle subsequently crashed into a tree.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m.

The police has issued a stern warning to motorists to stay within the speed limit when using the roads, as anyone caught not doing so will be dealt with according to the law.
